dc.description | Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that contributes the most to climate change including global warming. The concentration of this gas in the atmosphere has been increasing steadily since the Industrial Revolution. We have currently reached levels that call for immediate action in order to avoid crossing the point of no return. CO2 is released as a by-product of combustion and stays trapped in the atmosphere for a long time. This gas absorbs the light reflected from the surface and emits heat back, which is responsible for global warming. CO2 can also be absorbed by water decreasing the pH and causing other issues. Here we analyze the emissions of selected European countries and divide them in three groups based on the CO2 emissions from 1960 to 2014. Countries like the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, and the United Kingdom need to tighten their measures in order to mitigate this environmental problem as they are the ones that pollute the most. Based on predictions made from time series models, some of these countries will increase or stabilize their emissions in the future while what we currently need is the decrease of emissions.
