This article shows the results of the hydrodynamic modelling in laminar and turbulent flow conditions for a UASB up flow anaerobic reactor at laboratory scale. The two-dimensional numerical study was performed using the Ansys ® software. The methodology used has five stages: a) Conceptual model, b) Mathematical model, c) Mesh convergence and geometry definition, d) Simulation of laminar and turbulent flow and e) Comparative analysis of velocity. The modelling process used an Eulerian-Eulerian approach, characterized by three phases: liquid (α), gas (β) and solid (Ɣ), the latter concerning the fluidized bed. The description of the turbulent flow was made from the k – Epsilon model. To validate the numerical study, experimental data of the reactor water exit velocity and the calculation of the IGC Mesh Convergence Index were used. From the comparative analysis of the values of the calculated velocity profiles, it is observed that although there are differences in the velocity values predicted by the two evaluated viscosity models. These differences are not significant and therefore the representation of this type of hydrosystem can be done using laminar or turbulent flow approaches.
